Courchevel is one of our favourite winter sports destinations – and this season our attention has turned to Portetta, the stylish mountain retreat hotel that’s been created by the people behind the UK’s exceptional Lime Wood countryside hotel.
Portetta, an alpine lodge-style property in Courchevel Moriond, is home to ‘Cucina Angelina’, the chic mountain restaurant by Michelin-starred chef Angela Hartnett – and we love it!
Here Angela Hartnett, Chef Patron at the renowned Murano restaurant in London, and one of Britain’s most recognised chefs, brings her passion for Italian food to the Alps. Cucina Angelina reflects the local Savoyard cuisine of Italian and French influences.
Angela together with her resident Head Chef, bring together superb local and international produce, creating tempting dishes of antipasti, such as ‘Porcini torta’, (mushroom tart, toasted hazelnuts, pesto), ‘Insalata anatra’ (smoked duck breast, chicory, pistachio), and ‘Orata’ (sea bream ceviche, fennel, chilli, orange). Comforting pasta plates include ‘Agnolott’ (rabbit, lemon, olives, sage) and ‘Wild Boar Lasagna’ (wild boar ragout, parmesan béchamel); and there are superb dry-aged meats from the grill.
There are Savoyard classics to try too, such as Cheese Fondue and Raclette of course; and not forgetting French favourites like ‘Boeuf Bourguignon’, ‘Cuisse de canard confite’ and ‘Terrine de foie gras’.
Found at the at the eastern end of the 3 Valleys, the world’s biggest skiing area, Courchevel offers so much. There is guaranteed snow – and this season is set to be one of the best yet.
There are six alpine villages that make up the resort area, each at a different altitude and each with their own identity. For example, there’s the glamour and sophistication of Courchevel 1850 and the charm Courchevel La Praz – but this season we recommend you set your sights on Courchevel Moriond, with its brand new, fast and comfortable Moriond Gondola, and 3000m toboggan run! It’s in Moriond where one can find the fabulous Portetta Hotel.
Portetta is a ski-in/ski-out property with glorious alpine design – think warm, vintage wood, deep sofas, and roaring fires.
The hotel also has Courchevel’s best après ski bar, Fire & Ice – you must try the frozen shots!
For relaxing tired muscles head to the in-house spa for wellness treatments.
There are 38 guest rooms, including family rooms & suites.
Yet above all, we adore the hotel’s lofts. The hotel’s top two floors are dedicated to six of these stylish, spacious self-contained loft apartments, with kitchens.
Two of the lofts are duplex. These are ideal for families who want flexible accommodation but also the style and finesse of Portetta’s hotel services – including the great food at Cucina Angelina.
Andrew Forbes was a guest of Portetta Hotel, where rates are from 240€ (per person per night). For a week, rates are from £1,766 per person which includes dinner, bed and breakfast.
