Sanders – boutique hotel bliss in Copenhagen

Now is the time to shimmy over to the Danish capital. 2018 is set to be Copenhagen’s year. Unprecedented international interest in this Nordic capital of design has led to significant growth in the city’s hospitality sector, bringing even more style and design finesse to the city.

On our recent visit we found that few Copenhagen properties can compare to Sanders, Copenhagen’s first world-class boutique hotel. This new, sophisticated 52 room property is found just steps from the Royal Danish Theatre, where the hotel’s founder and design visionary Alexander Kølpin used to perform, as the Principal ‘danseur’ in the Danish Royal Ballet.

Named after Alexander’s sobriquet, ‘Sanders’ is full of personal attention to detail; and is truly a reflection of Kølpin love of the arts and travel. From the exceptional materials used in the property’s re-modelling, to the exquisite, bespoke mid-century furnishings, each element has been designed or curated to create a truly harmonious environment. It’s the kind of place where you immediately feel comfortable – it’s elegant, yet relaxed; beautifully designed, but with a genuine sense of authenticity.

The aesthetic is the contrary to the typical minimalism of Denmark. Instead expect a welcoming aesthetic of luxury and warmth. Kølpin’s desire for guests is that

Entering Sanders is like stepping into a theatre. Guests will always remain centre stage, but the scenography and carefully curated interiors will be the elegant and exquisite backdrop for their experience. The passion, generosity and professionalism of our staff will orchestrate the production to provide a memorable experience for our guests.

Sanders is just a few minutes’ walk away from the charming, historic, and of course iconic, port of Newhavn. The neighbourhood is the perfect place to smooch around from cosy bar to stylish restaurant.

Yet the temptation will be to stay within the embracing environment of the hotel. Originally three 19th century townhouses, the hotel has integrated the adjacent buildings into one, yet on the ground floor has maintained three distinct areas for guests and non-residents to enjoy. Kølpin believes that

From the first note to the closing of the curtains, it is all about the journey you take a spectator on. I think about the guest experience at Sanders in a similar way.

Public Spaces

The Sanders Kitchen is an intimate restaurant. This is also where  guests can also enjoy breakfast – the friendly team offering table service from a menu of delicious coffee, homemade pastries, fresh fruit salad, and hot dishes of eggs and Danish bacon.

The Lobby / Living Room with library and adjacent heated courtyard patio is the heart of the hotel.

The TATA Cocktail Bar has already become a favourite city watering hole for city’s smart, cultural crowd.

The top 5th floor is home to The Conservatory; styled as a period winter garden conservatory offering a light filled space for refreshments and snacks.

Guest Rooms

Sanders’ unique ambiance is the fruits of the successful collaboration between Alexander and his father Jes, founders of Kolpin Hotels, together with  the London studio of Lind + Almond.

The hotel’s design evokes the romantic golden age of luxury travel, whilst also reflecting the drama of the theatre that has been such an integral part of Alexander’s life.

Guest room types include individual use ‘Coupe’ rooms with bespoke integrated furniture for the bed and wardrobe.

Sanders bedrooms and Master Bedrooms have double beds, whilst suites have king beds.

All rooms are equipped with complimentary minibars, televisions, security boxes, slippers, kimonos and luxury toiletries.

If you are looking for a little more space to strut your stuff, then choose one of the spacious Sanders Apartments with separate living room, dining room and large kitchen that is fully stocked with guests preferred items. The bedroom features are vintage bath tub in addition to the larger shower room.

We loved the way the rooms were prepared with such superb attention to detail, with fresh flowers and gourmet chocolates, and a carafe of water. We loved too the complimentary minibar and fast, free internet!
